According to the United States Census Bureau, the community has a total area of 39.9 km² (15.4 mi²). 36.9 km² (14.2 mi²) of it is land and 3.1 km² (1.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 7.65% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,321 people, 2,963 households, and 2,074 families residing in the community. The population density is 225.6/km² (584.4/mi²). There are 3,603 housing units at an average density of 97.7/km² (253.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 80.69% White, 1.23% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.43% Asian, 0.13% Pacific Islander, 14.85% from other races, and 2.04% from two or more races. 36.73% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 2,963 households out of which 29.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.6% are married couples living together, 10.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.0% are non-families. 23.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.79 and the average family size is 3.28.
In the community the population is spread out with 26.5% under the age of 18, 9.6% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 21.1% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who are 65 years of age or older.
