St. Lucie County is a county located in the state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 192,695.

History
St. Lucie County was created in 1844. It was named for Saint Lucie of Syracuse, Roman Catholic saint, born in Sicily, executed in 304 for being a Christian.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,782 km2 (688 mi2). 1,483 km2 (572 mi2) of it is land and 299 km2 (116 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 16.80% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 192,695 people, 76,933 households, and 54,237 families residing in the county. The population density is 130/km2 (337/mi2). There are 91,262 housing units at an average density of 62/km2 (159/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 79.14% White, 15.42% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.95% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.37% from other races, and 1.82% from two or more races. 8.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 76,933 households out of which 26.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 11.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.50% are non-families. 23.50% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.47 and the average family size is 2.89.
In the county the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.00% from 45 to 64, and 22.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 95.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.80 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $36,363, and the median income for a family is $41,381. Males have a median income of $30,047 versus $22,684 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,790. 13.40% of the population and 9.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.50% of those under the age of 18 and 7.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
