Lake County is a county located in the state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 210,528. Its county seat is Tavares, Florida6.

History

Lake County was created in 1887. It was named for the numerous lakes in the area. There are approximately 1,400 named lakes.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,995 km² (1,156 mi²). 2,469 km² (953 mi²) of it is land and 526 km² (203 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.58% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 210,528 people, 88,413 households, and 62,507 families residing in the county. The population density is 85/km² (221/mi²). There are 102,830 housing units at an average density of 42/km² (108/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.46% White, 8.31% Black or African American, 0.33% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.88% from other races, and 1.18% from two or more races. 5.61% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 88,413 households out of which 23.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.90% are married couples living together, 8.50% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.30% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.75.

In the county the population is spread out with 20.30% under the age of 18, 5.80% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 23.80% from 45 to 64, and 26.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 45 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,903, and the median income for a family is $42,577. Males have a median income of $31,475 versus $23,545 for females. The per capita income for the county is $20,199. 9.60% of the population and 6.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.80% of those under the age of 18 and 6.30% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
