Astor, Florida

Astor is a census-designated place located in Lake County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the CDP had a total population of 1,487.

Located on the St. Johns River, Astor was first settled in 1562 by Huguenot families who had fled religious persecution in France. The entire colony was wiped out by the Spanish in 1566 in pursuit of a Roman Catholic-only policy. In the late 1800s, William Backhouse Astor, Sr. from New York City's wealthy Astor family resurrected the town, naming it Manhattan. Later, it would be renamed Astor in his honor.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²). 6.4 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and none of it is covered by water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 1,487 people, 641 households, and 444 families residing in the CDP. The population density is 233.4/km² (603.3/mi²). There are 1,027 housing units at an average density of 161.2/km² (416.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the CDP is 96.97% White, 0.67% African American, 0.81% Native American, 0.00% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 1.21% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 9.15% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 641 households out of which 20.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.2% are married couples living together, 7.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% are non-families. 24.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.6% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.68.

In the CDP the population is spread out with 19.9% under the age of 18, 5.2% from 18 to 24, 20.4% from 25 to 44, 30.6% from 45 to 64, and 23.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 48 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP is $31,284, and the median income for a family is $31,786. Males have a median income of $22,074 versus $20,949 for females. The per capita income for the CDP is $14,467. 12.5% of the population and 9.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.3% of those under the age of 18 and 6.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
