Bay County is a county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 148,217. Its county seat is Panama City, Florida6.

History

Bay County was created in 1913. It was named for the nearby Saint Andrews Bay.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,676 km² (1,033 mi²). 1,978 km² (764 mi²) of it is land and 698 km² (270 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 26.09% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 148,217 people, 59,597 households, and 40,466 families residing in the county. The population density is 75/km² (194/mi²). There are 78,435 housing units at an average density of 40/km² (103/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.17% White, 10.64% Black or African American, 0.78% Native American, 1.73% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 0.66% from other races, and 1.94% from two or more races. 2.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 59,597 households out of which 30.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.00% are married couples living together, 12.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.10% are non-families. 26.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.43 and the average family size is 2.92.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.00% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 30.20% from 25 to 44, 23.70% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 98.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,092, and the median income for a family is $42,729. Males have a median income of $30,116 versus $21,676 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,700. 13.00% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.30% of those under the age of 18 and 11.00% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
