Pembroke Pines is a city located in Broward County, Florida. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 137,427.

History
Pembroke Pines was incorporated in 1960, although the name of the city may date back much further. The city may have been named after an early landowner from Britain known as the Earl of Pembroke. Others believe it was named after the main road shaded with pines that led to the city.
Pembroke Pines was also home to the most dangerous road intersection in the United States in 2001, according to State Farm Insurance.[1] (http://www.statefarm.com/di/danlist00.htm)

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 89.2 km² (34.4 mi²). 85.6 km² (33.0 mi²) of it is land and 3.6 km² (1.4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.01% water.
Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 137,427 people, 51,989 households, and 36,860 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,605.5/km² (4,157.6/mi²). There are 55,296 housing units at an average density of 646.0/km² (1,672.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 75.58% White, 13.25% African American, 0.19% Native American, 3.76% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 3.70% from other races, and 3.47% from two or more races. 28.16% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 51,989 households out of which 36.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 56.4% are married couples living together, 11.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.1% are non-families. 24.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.13.
In the city the population is spread out with 25.6% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 33.5% from 25 to 44, 19.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 87.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $52,629, and the median income for a family is $61,480. Males have a median income of $45,129 versus $32,531 for females. The per capita income for the city is $23,843. 5.4% of the population and 3.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 5.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.1% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
