Demographics
As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 17,589 people, 6,034 households, and 4,537 families residing in the community. The population density is 579.9/km² (1,502.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the community is 54.33% White, 34.61% African American, 0.53% Native American, 1.21% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 6.13% from other races, and 3.17% from two or more races. 22.50% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,034 households out of which 38.7% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.6% are married couples living together, 21.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.8% are non-families. 19.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.33.
