Tift County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 38,407. The county's county seat is Tifton, Georgia6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 696 km² (269 mi²). 686 km² (265 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.42% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,407 people, 13,919 households, and 10,105 families residing in the county. The population density is 56/km² (145/mi²). There are 15,411 housing units at an average density of 22/km² (58/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 65.31% White, 28.02% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.98% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 4.59% from other races, and 0.88% from two or more races. 7.67% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 13,919 households out of which 35.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.40% are married couples living together, 16.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 23.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.10.
