Johnson County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 8,560. The county's county seat is Wrightsville, Georgia6.

History
Johnson county was formed in 1858 from parts of Emanuel, Laurens and Washington counties. Johnson County was named for Georgia governor, senator, and unsuccessful U.S. vice-presidential candidate Herschel Vespasian Johnson.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 794 km² (307 mi²). 788 km² (304 mi²) of it is land and 6 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.74% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 8,560 people, 3,130 households, and 2,241 families residing in the county. The population density is 11/km² (28/mi²). There are 3,634 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (12/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 62.44% White, 36.96% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.12% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.07% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 3,130 households out of which 32.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.70% are married couples living together, 18.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.40% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.53 and the average family size is 3.06.
In the county the population is spread out with 30.10% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 24.30% from 25 to 44, 21.10% from 45 to 64, and 15.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 83.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $23,848, and the median income for a family is $29,663. Males have a median income of $28,952 versus $18,171 for females. The per capita income for the county is $12,384. 22.60% of the population and 20.90% of families are below the poverty line.
