Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 808 km² (312 mi²). 806 km² (311 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.32% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 38,127 people, 14,012 households, and 10,340 families residing in the county. The population density is 47/km² (122/mi²). There are 15,059 housing units at an average density of 19/km² (48/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 80.52% White, 13.34% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 4.62% from other races, and 0.95% from two or more races. 7.66% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 14,012 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 13.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 22.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.66 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 28.80% from 25 to 44, 22.30% from 45 to 64, and 13.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 35 years. For every 100 females there are 99.20 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.70 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $32,328, and the median income for a family is $37,847. Males have a median income of $29,985 versus $21,452 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,617. 15.50% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 18.70% of those under the age of 18 and 12.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
