Lee County is a county located in the state of Georgia. As of 2000, the population is 24,757. Its county seat is Leesburg, Georgia6.
The land for Lee, Muscogee, Troup, Coweta, and Carroll counties was ceded by the Creek people in the 1825 Treaty of Indian Springs. The counties' boundaries were created by the Georgia General Assembly on June 9, but they were not named until December 14 of 1826.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 938 km² (362 mi²). 921 km² (356 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.72% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 24,757 people, 8,229 households, and 6,797 families residing in the county. The population density is 27/km² (70/mi²). There are 8,813 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 82.24% White, 15.50% Black or African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.84% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.68% from two or more races. 1.21% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 8,229 households out of which 48.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.80% are married couples living together, 13.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 17.40% are non-families. 14.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.91 and the average family size is 3.21.
In the county the population is spread out with 30.70% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 33.20% from 25 to 44, 21.30% from 45 to 64, and 6.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 102.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.20 males.
