Pope County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 4,413. Its county seat is Golconda, Illinois6.
The county was organized in 1816 from portions of Gallatin County and Johnson County and named after Nathaniel Pope, a Secretary of the Illinois Territory.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 970 km² (375 mi²). 961 km² (371 mi²) of it is land and 10 km² (4 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,413 people, 1,769 households, and 1,220 families residing in the county. The population density is 5/km² (12/mi²). There are 2,351 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (6/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.29% White, 3.76% Black or African American, 0.79% Native American, 0.27% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.45% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. 0.91% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,769 households out of which 27.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.80% are married couples living together, 7.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.00% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.33 and the average family size is 2.84.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.50% under the age of 18, 10.20% from 18 to 24, 23.80% from 25 to 44, 26.70% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 41 years. For every 100 females there are 102.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 101.20 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $30,048, and the median income for a family is $37,860. Males have a median income of $33,717 versus $20,074 for females. The per capita income for the county is $16,440. 18.20% of the population and 9.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.40% of those under the age of 18 and 8.40% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
