Hardin County is a county located in the state of Illinois. Formed in 1839, the county, and particularly the city Cave-In-Rock, was a stronghold for outlaws, bandits, pirates, and counterfeiters.
As of 2000, the population is 4,800. Its county seat is Elizabethtown, Illinois6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 470 km² (182 mi²). 462 km² (178 mi²) of it is land and 8 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.76% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 4,800 people, 1,987 households, and 1,367 families residing in the county. The population density is 10/km² (27/mi²). There are 2,494 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (14/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.42% White, 2.75% Black or African American, 0.04% Native American, 0.50% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 0.48% from other races, and 0.69% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,987 households out of which 28.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.20% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.20% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.81.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.40% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.20% from 25 to 44, 26.90% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 100.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $27,693, and the median income for a family is $31,625. Males have a median income of $32,414 versus $17,091 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,984. 18.60% of the population and 14.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.60% of those under the age of 18 and 11.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
