Madison County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 258,941. Its county seat is Edwardsville, Illinois6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,918 km² (740 mi²). 1,878 km² (725 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 258,941 people, 101,953 households, and 70,041 families residing in the county. The population density is 138/km² (357/mi²). There are 108,942 housing units at an average density of 58/km² (150/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.23% White, 7.31% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 101,953 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 9.40% from 18 to 24, 28.90% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $41,541, and the median income for a family is $50,862. Males have a median income of $39,857 versus $25,968 for females.
