Madison County is a county located in the state of Illinois. As of 2000, the population is 258,941. Its county seat is Edwardsville, Illinois6.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,918 km² (740 mi²). 1,878 km² (725 mi²) of it is land and 40 km² (15 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.07% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 258,941 people, 101,953 households, and 70,041 families residing in the county. The population density is 138/km² (357/mi²). There are 108,942 housing units at an average density of 58/km² (150/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 90.23% White, 7.31% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.60% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.08% from two or more races. 1.52% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 101,953 households out of which 32.20% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.00% are married couples living together, 11.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.30% are non-families. 26.30% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.00.
