Shelby County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 33,337. Its name is in honor of Isaac Shelby, Governor of Kentucky. Its county seat is Shelbyville6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 999 km² (386 mi²). 995 km² (384 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 33,337 people, 12,104 households, and 9,126 families residing in the county. The population density is 34/km² (87/mi²). There are 12,857 housing units at an average density of 13/km² (34/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 86.61% White, 8.83% Black or African American, 0.30% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 2.39% from other races, and 1.34% from two or more races. 4.51% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,104 households out of which 34.70% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.00% are married couples living together, 10.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 24.60% are non-families. 20.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.00.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.20% under the age of 18, 8.70% from 18 to 24, 31.40% from 25 to 44, 24.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 94.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.30 males.
