Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 452 km² (174 mi²). 448 km² (173 mi²) of it is land and 3 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.76% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 39,041 people, 13,867 households, and 10,663 families residing in the county. The population density is 87/km² (226/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.44% White, 3.13% Black or African American, 0.20% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.47% from other races, and 1.14% from two or more races. 1.31% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
