Rowan County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 22,094. Its county seat is Morehead6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 741 km² (286 mi²). 727 km² (281 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.90% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 22,094 people, 7,927 households, and 5,215 families residing in the county. The population density is 30/km² (79/mi²). There are 8,985 housing units at an average density of 12/km² (32/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 95.98% White, 1.56% Black or African American, 0.21% Native American, 0.89% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.38% from other races, and 0.97% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 7,927 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.40% are married couples living together, 10.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 34.20% are non-families. 27.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.91.
In the county the population is spread out with 20.30% under the age of 18, 23.50% from 18 to 24, 25.90% from 25 to 44, 20.00% from 45 to 64, and 10.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 30 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 93.10 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $28,055, and the median income for a family is $34,338. Males have a median income of $26,777 versus $20,104 for females. The per capita income for the county is $13,888. 21.30% of the population and 15.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.80% of those under the age of 18 and 16.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
