Franklin County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 47,687. Its county seat is Frankfort6. It was named after the American inventor and statesman Benjamin Franklin. It was carved out of parts of Woodford, Mercer and Shelby counties.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 549 km² (212 mi²). 545 km² (210 mi²) of it is land and 4 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.78% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 47,687 people, 19,907 households, and 12,840 families residing in the county. The population density is 87/km² (227/mi²). There are 21,409 housing units at an average density of 39/km² (102/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 87.98% White, 9.36% Black or African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.72% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.55% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. 1.11% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 19,907 households out of which 29.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.70% are married couples living together, 12.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.50% are non-families. 30.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.30 and the average family size is 2.86.
In the county the population is spread out with 22.60% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 30.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 12.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.70 males.
