Knott County is a county located in the state of Kentucky. As of 2000, the population is 17,649. Its county seat is Hindman6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 914 km² (353 mi²). 912 km² (352 mi²) of it is land and 2 km² (1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.23% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 17,649 people, 6,717 households, and 4,990 families residing in the county. The population density is 19/km² (50/mi²). There are 7,579 housing units at an average density of 8/km² (22/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.27% White, 0.73% Black or African American, 0.11% Native American, 0.15% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.60% from two or more races. 0.63% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,717 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.60% are married couples living together, 12.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.70% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.54 and the average family size is 3.00.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.50% under the age of 18, 10.80% from 18 to 24, 29.00% from 25 to 44, 24.30% from 45 to 64, and 11.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.30 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $20,373, and the median income for a family is $24,930. Males have a median income of $29,471 versus $21,240 for females. The per capita income for the county is $11,297. 31.10% of the population and 26.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 39.80% of those under the age of 18 and 23.10% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
