St. Charles County is a county located in the state of Missouri. As of 2000, the population is 283,883. Its county seat is Saint Charles6.

Geography

The county has a total area of 1,534 km2 (592 mi2). 1,451 km2 (560 mi2) of it is land and 83 km2 (32 mi2) of it is water. The total area is 5.39% water.

As of 2000, there are 283,883 people, 101,663 households, and 77,060 families residing in the county. The population density is 196/km2 (507/mi2). There are 105,514 housing units at an average density of 73 persons/km2 (188 persons/mi2). The racial makeup of the county is 94.67% White, 2.69% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.46% from other races, and 1.07% from two or more races. 1.47% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 101,663 households out of which 40.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 63.20% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a woman whose husband does not live with her, and 24.20% are non-families. 19.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.76 and the average family size is 3.18.

In the county the population is spread out with 29.00% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 32.60% from 25 to 44, 21.60% from 45 to 64, and 8.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 97.10 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 94.10 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $57,258, and the median income for a family is $64,415. Males have a median income of $44,528 versus $29,405 for females. The per capita income for the county is $23,592. 4.00% of the population and 2.80% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total people living in poverty, 4.90% are under the age of 18 and 5.10% are 65 or older.
