According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 61.0 km² (23.6 mi²). 55.4 km² (21.4 mi²) of it is land and 5.7 km² (2.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.29% water.

The racial makeup of the city is 85.35% White, 5.58% African American, 0.20% Native American, 7.11% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.71% from other races, and 1.02% from two or more races. 2.33% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,302 households out of which 25.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% are married couples living together, 9.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% are non-families. 33.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 5.5% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.25 and the average family size is 2.94.
