Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,147 km² (829 mi²). 2,142 km² (827 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.22% water.

There are 13,221 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.34% White, 0.91% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.24% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. 0.78% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,064 households out of which 30.50% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.40% are married couples living together, 9.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.70% are non-families. 26.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older.
