According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,819 km² (702 mi²). 1,799 km² (695 mi²) of it is land and 20 km² (8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.08% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 96.95% White, 1.72% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.79% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
