Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,400 km² (541 mi²). 1,395 km² (539 mi²) of it is land and 5 km² (2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.37% water.

There are 29,087 housing units at an average density of 21/km² (54/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.39% White, 0.19% Black or African American, 0.47% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.49% from other races, and 1.17% from two or more races. 1.81% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 26,896 households out of which 35.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.10% are married couples living together, 10.30% have a female householder with no husband present, and 26.20% are non-families. 21.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.06.
