Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,367 km² (914 mi²). 2,104 km² (812 mi²) of it is land and 263 km² (101 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 11.10% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 58,266 people, 21,454 households, and 15,983 families residing in the county. The population density is 28/km² (72/mi²). There are 23,378 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.05% White, 1.07% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.31% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.72% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.30% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,454 households out of which 34.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.20% are married couples living together, 9.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 25.50% are non-families. 21.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 9.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.65 and the average family size is 3.07.
In the county the population is spread out with 26.80% under the age of 18, 8.20% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 24.10% from 45 to 64, and 12.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 37 years. For every 100 females there are 99.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.20 males.
