Dickinson County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 27,472. Its county seat is Iron Mountain6.
Dickinson is Michigan's newest county, formed in 1896 from parts of Marquette, Menominee, and Iron counties. It was named for Don M. Dickinson, U.S. Postmaster General under President Grover Cleveland.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,013 km² (777 mi²). 1,985 km² (766 mi²) of it is land and 28 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.39% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 27,472 people, 11,386 households, and 7,583 families residing in the county. The population density is 14/km² (36/mi²). There are 13,702 housing units at an average density of 7/km² (18/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.95% White, 0.12% Black or African American, 0.52% Native American, 0.40% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.14% from other races, and 0.85% from two or more races. 0.68% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 11,386 households out of which 31.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.90% are married couples living together, 8.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.40% are non-families. 29.40% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.90% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.37 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.10% under the age of 18, 6.30% from 18 to 24, 27.20% from 25 to 44, 23.30% from 45 to 64, and 18.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.60 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $34,825, and the median income for a family is $43,021. Males have a median income of $36,501 versus $22,952 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,516. 9.10% of the population and 7.10% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 11.20% of those under the age of 18 and 8.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
