Alpena County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 31,314. Its county seat is Alpena6.

Geography
Alpena County is in the northeast of the mitten-shaped Lower Peninsula of Michigan. Lake Huron and Thunder Bay are to the east, Alcona County to the south, Oscoda County to the southwest, Montmorency County to the west, and Presque Isle County to the north. Most of the county is drained by the Thunder Bay River and its tributaries. The Mackinaw State Forest occupies large tracts of land in the county. The Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary is located offshore adjacent to the county.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 4,390 km² (1,695 mi²). 1,487 km² (574 mi²) of it is land and 2,903 km² (1,121 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 66.13% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 31,314 people, 12,818 households, and 8,690 families residing in the county. The population density is 21/km² (54/mi²). There are 15,289 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (27/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.21% White, 0.25% Black or African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.33% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 0.58% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 12,818 households out of which 29.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.30% are married couples living together, 9.00% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 27.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.30% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.40 and the average family size is 2.93.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.70% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 26.50% from 25 to 44, 24.90% from 45 to 64, and 17.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 94.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.50 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $34,177, and the median income for a family is $42,366. Males have a median income of $34,571 versus $21,962 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,566. 10.50% of the population and 7.70% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.10% of those under the age of 18 and 6.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
