Sagola Township is a township located in Dickinson County in the U.S. state of Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the township had a total population of 1,169.
Communities
- Sagola is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 95 at the junction with Michigan State Highway 69 west. Crystal Falls is 13 miles west on M-69. M-69 runs concurrently with M-95 south of town about six miles to just north of Randville. Sagola is at Template:Coor dms.
- Randville is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 95 about 14 miles north of Iron Mountain. It is just south of the junction with Michigan State Highway 69 west at Template:Coor dms.
- Channing is an unincorporated community in the township on Michigan State Highway 95 about 24 miles north of Iron Mountain at Template:Coor dms.
Geography
Much of the township is the Copper Country State Forest. The northwest portion is drained by the Michigamme River. A small portion of the northeast is drained by tributaries of the Escanaba River. The central portion is drained by the Ford River, and the south by the Sturgeon River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 421.8 km² (162.8 mi²). 415.2 km² (160.3 mi²) of it is land and 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.55% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,169 people, 475 households, and 323 families residing in the township. The population density is 2.8/km² (7.3/mi²). There are 930 housing units at an average density of 2.2/km² (5.8/mi²). The racial makeup of the township is 98.20% White, 0.00% African American, 0.86% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.34% from other races, and 0.51% from two or more races. 1.03% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 475 households out of which 30.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.7% are married couples living together, 5.7% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% are non-families. 28.2% of all households are made up of individuals and 13.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.04.
In the township the population is spread out with 26.4% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 25.6% from 25 to 44, 26.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 100.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 100.5 males.
The median income for a household in the township is $33,333, and the median income for a family is $42,250. Males have a median income of $31,900 versus $22,000 for females. The per capita income for the township is $15,531. 12.1% of the population and 7.6% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.9% of those under the age of 18 and 9.2% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
