Gosport is a small town on the South Coast of England, in Hampshire. It lies opposite the city of Portsmouth, on the western side of Portsmouth Harbour. There is a ferry to Portsmouth. It forms part of the South Hampshire conurbation.
The Rowner area of the peninsula was known to have been settled in Saxon times [1] (http://www.hants.gov.uk/hampshiretreasures/vol12/page003.html), with settlements in the wider region dating back much earlier [2] (http://www.hants.gov.uk/hampshiretreasures/vol10/page005.html).
The borough's name is believed to derive from 'gorse' or 'goose'.
