According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,911 km² (1,510 mi²). 3,895 km² (1,504 mi²) of it is land and 16 km² (6 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.41% water.

The racial makeup of the county is 97.56% White, 0.21% Black or African American, 1.48% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.12% from other races, and 0.52% from two or more races. 0.39% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
