Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,857 km² (717 mi²). 1,781 km² (688 mi²) of it is land and 76 km² (29 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 4.10% water.

There are 11,324 housing units at an average density of 6/km² (16/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.74% White, 0.14% Black or African American, 1.41% Native American, 0.28% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.57% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 1.06% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 10,357 households out of which 33.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.50% are married couples living together, 8.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.60% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.46 and the average family size is 3.04.
