Mitchell is a city located in Davison County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 14,558. It is the county seat of Davison CountyTemplate:GR.

Mitchell is located at 43°42'50" North, 98°1'35" West (43.713896, -98.026282)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 28.2 km² (10.9 mi²). 25.6 km² (9.9 mi²) of it is land and 2.6 km² (1.0 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 9.29% water.

Mitchell has been assigned the ZIP code 57301 and the FIPS place code 43100.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 14,558 people, 6,121 households, and 3,599 families residing in the city. The population density is 569.5/km² (1,475.7/mi²). There are 6,555 housing units at an average density of 256.4/km² (664.4/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 95.63% White, 0.32% African American, 2.40% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.29% from other races, and 0.87% from two or more races. 0.77% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 6,121 households out of which 28.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.6% are married couples living together, 9.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% are non-families. 34.3% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.27 and the average family size is 2.95.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.1% under the age of 18, 13.4% from 18 to 24, 25.3% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $31,308, and the median income for a family is $43,095. Males have a median income of $30,881 versus $20,794 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,888. 12.8% of the population and 8.8% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 12.7% of those under the age of 18 and 10.9% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Attractions

Mitchell is home of the world famous Corn Palace. The Corn Palace is decorated with several colors of dried corn and grains creating murals. The theme of the murals is changed regularly. The building itself is used for several purposes including a basketball arena, staged entertainment, and the Shriner's Circus.
