Brandon is a city located in Minnehaha County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 5,693.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²). 9.8 km² (3.8 mi²) of it is land and none of the area is covered with water.

Brandon has been assigned the ZIP code 57005, and the FIPS place code 06840.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 5,693 people, 1,909 households, and 1,592 families residing in the city. The population density is 580.0/km² (1,500.8/mi²). There are 1,976 housing units at an average density of 201.3/km² (520.9/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 98.23% White, 0.42% African American, 0.39% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.09% from other races, and 0.61% from two or more races. 0.42% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,909 households out of which 53.2% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 71.0% are married couples living together, 10.0% have a female householder with no husband present, and 16.6% are non-families. 13.4% of all households are made up of individuals and 4.3% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.96 and the average family size is 3.26.

In the city the population is spread out with 34.5% under the age of 18, 6.6% from 18 to 24, 34.9% from 25 to 44, 17.2% from 45 to 64, and 6.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 31 years. For every 100 females there are 97.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 92.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $58,421, and the median income for a family is $60,472. Males have a median income of $36,354 versus $25,302 for females. The per capita income for the city is $19,869. 2.3% of the population and 2.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.0% of those under the age of 18 and 3.7% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
