Canton is a city located in Lincoln County, South Dakota. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 3,110. It is the county seat of Lincoln CountyTemplate:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.7 km² (3.0 mi²). 7.6 km² (3.0 mi²) of it is land and 0.1 km² (0.04 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.01% water.

Canton has been assigned the ZIP code 57013 and the FIPS place code 09500.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 3,110 people, 1,209 households, and 824 families residing in the city. The population density is 407.0/km² (1,053.4/mi²). There are 1,286 housing units at an average density of 168.3/km² (435.6/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 97.43% White, 0.32% African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.03% from other races, and 0.84% from two or more races. 0.48% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 1,209 households out of which 35.9% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 9.2% have a female householder with no husband present, and 31.8% are non-families. 28.9% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.9% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.49 and the average family size is 3.07.

In the city the population is spread out with 28.1% under the age of 18, 8.0% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 19.6% from 45 to 64, and 16.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 93.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 88.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $38,654, and the median income for a family is $46,058. Males have a median income of $31,121 versus $20,902 for females. The per capita income for the city is $17,891. 4.7% of the population and 2.0% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 3.1% of those under the age of 18 and 7.8% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
