Grant County is a county located in the state of South Dakota. As of 2000, the population is 7,847. Its county seat is Milbank6.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,782 km² (688 mi²). 1,768 km² (683 mi²) of it is land and 14 km² (5 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.78% water.

There are 3,456 housing units at an average density of 2/km² (5/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 98.61% White, 0.01% Black or African American, 0.43% Native American, 0.23% Asian, 0.00% Pacific Islander, 0.40% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.55% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,116 households out of which 33.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.60% are married couples living together, 5.20% have a female householder with no husband present, and 30.80% are non-families. 28.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.00% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.44 and the average family size is 3.02.

In the county, the population is spread out with 26.60% under the age of 18, 5.70% from 18 to 24, 25.10% from 25 to 44, 23.50% from 45 to 64, and 19.10% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 96.10 males.
