St. Joseph County is a county located in the state of Michigan. As of 2000, the population is 62,422. Its county seat is Centreville6.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,350 km² (521 mi²). 1,305 km² (504 mi²) of it is land and 45 km² (17 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 3.34% water, the largest percentage in the entire state of Michigan. St. Joseph County borders Branch County to the east, Kalamazoo County to the north, Cass County to the west, and Lagrange County, Indiana to the south.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 62,422 people, 23,381 households, and 16,600 families residing in the county. The population density is 48/km² (124/mi²). There are 26,503 housing units at an average density of 20/km² (53/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 93.49% White, 2.58% Black or African American, 0.38% Native American, 0.58% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 1.51% from other races, and 1.46% from two or more races. 3.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 23,381 households out of which 34.10% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.90% are married couples living together, 10.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.00% are non-families. 23.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.10% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.63 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.50% under the age of 18, 8.90% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 22.50% from 45 to 64, and 13.00% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $40,355, and the median income for a family is $46,391. Males have a median income of $34,983 versus $23,638 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,247. 11.30% of the population and 8.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 15.50% of those under the age of 18 and 6.90% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
