Palm Beach County is a county located in the state of Florida. As of 2000, the population is 1,131,184. Its county seat is West Palm Beach, Florida6.

Palm Beach County is one of three counties that comprise the South Florida metropolitan area.

History

Palm Beach County was created in 1909. It was named for its first established town, Palm Beach, in turn named for the palm trees and beaches in the area.

Henry Flagler was instrumental in the county's development in the early 1900s with the extension of the Florida East Coast Railroad through the county from Jacksonville to Key West.

Geography

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 6,181 km² (2,386 mi²). 5,113 km² (1,974 mi²) of it is land and 1,068 km² (412 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 17.27% water.

The boundaries of area code 561 exactly match the county's. Originally, it was part of area code 305, and later area code 407.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 1,131,184 people, 474,175 households, and 303,946 families residing in the county. The population density is 221/km² (573/mi²). There are 556,428 housing units at an average density of 109/km² (282/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.05% White, 13.80% Black or African American, 0.22% Native American, 1.51% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 2.98% from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races. 12.44% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 474,175 households out of which 24.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.80% are married couples living together, 9.70% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.90% are non-families. 29.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.60% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.34 and the average family size is 2.89.

In the county the population is spread out with 21.30% under the age of 18, 6.60% from 18 to 24, 27.00% from 25 to 44, 22.00% from 45 to 64, and 23.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 42 years. For every 100 females there are 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 90.50 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $45,062, and the median income for a family is $53,701. Males have a median income of $36,931 versus $28,674 for females. The per capita income for the county is $28,801. 9.90% of the population and 6.90% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.30% of those under the age of 18 and 6.60% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

Palm Beach County borders Martin County to the North, the Atlantic Ocean to the East, Broward County to the South, Hendry County to the West, and Lake Okeechobee to the Northwest.
