Mississippi County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 51,979. There are two county seats, Blytheville and Osceola. The county was formed on November 1, 1833 and named for the Mississippi River.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,382 km² (920 mi²). 2,326 km² (898 mi²) of it is land and 56 km² (21 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.34% water.

There are 22,310 housing units at an average density of 10/km² (25/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 64.45% White, 32.70% Black or African American, 0.26% Native American, 0.38% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.07% from other races, and 1.12% from two or more races. 2.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 19,349 households out of which 36.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.00% are married couples living together, 17.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 28.10% are non-families. 24.70% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.70% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.64 and the average family size is 3.15.
In the county the population is spread out with 29.60% under the age of 18, 9.90% from 18 to 24, 27.50% from 25 to 44, 20.80% from 45 to 64, and 12.20% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 33 years. For every 100 females there are 91.80 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 87.70 males.
