Stone County, Arkansas

Stone County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 11,499. The county seat is Mountain View. The county was formed on April 21, 1873 and named for the natural stone formations in the area.
Stone county is home to the famous Blanchard Springs Caverns.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,578 km² (609 mi²). 1,571 km² (607 mi²) of it is land and 7 km² (3 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.47% water.

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 11,499 people, 4,768 households, and 3,461 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 5,715 housing units at an average density of 4/km² (9/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 97.27% White, 0.08% Black or African American, 0.77% Native American, 0.05% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.15% from other races, and 1.64% from two or more races. 1.08% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 4,768 households out of which 26.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.30% are married couples living together, 7.10% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.40% are non-families. 24.80% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.20% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.38 and the average family size is 2.82.
In the county the population is spread out with 22.20% under the age of 18, 7.10% from 18 to 24, 23.60% from 25 to 44, 28.50% from 45 to 64, and 18.60% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 43 years. For every 100 females there are 96.90 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.30 males.
