Franklin County, Arkansas

Franklin County is a county located in the U.S. state of Arkansas. As of 2000, the population is 17,771. The county has two county seats, Charleston and Ozark. Franklin County was formed on December 19, 1837 and named for Benjamin Franklin, American statesman.

Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 1,605 km² (620 mi²). 1,579 km² (610 mi²) of it is land and 26 km² (10 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.63% water.

There are 7,673 housing units at an average density of 5/km² (13/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 96.17% White, 0.62% Black or African American, 0.80% Native American, 0.26% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.74% from other races, and 1.35% from two or more races. 1.74% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 6,882 households out of which 32.40% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.20% are married couples living together, 8.80% have a female householder with no husband present, and 27.90% are non-families. 24.60% of all households are made up of individuals and 12.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.51 and the average family size is 2.99.
In the county the population is spread out with 25.80% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 26.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.80% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 98.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.80 males.
