Manistee is a city located in Manistee County, Michigan. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 6,586. It is the county seat of Manistee County6. Manistee Township is located to the northeast of the city. The city is located at the mouth of the Manistee River on Lake Michigan.

Geography

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 11.3 km² (4.3 mi²). 8.4 km² (3.2 mi²) of it is land and 2.8 km² (1.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 25.29% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 6,586 people, 2,912 households, and 1,729 families residing in the city. The population density is 782.4/km² (2,023.7/mi²). There are 3,426 housing units at an average density of 407.0/km² (1,052.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 94.90% White, 0.33% African American, 1.38% Native American, 0.52% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.96% from other races, and 1.88% from two or more races. 2.20% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 2,912 households out of which 27.5% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.8% are married couples living together, 12.3% have a female householder with no husband present, and 40.6% are non-families. 35.1% of all households are made up of individuals and 17.8% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.24 and the average family size is 2.88.

In the city the population is spread out with 24.0% under the age of 18, 7.3% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 23.1% from 45 to 64, and 19.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 40 years. For every 100 females there are 86.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,351, and the median income for a family is $41,816. Males have a median income of $35,347 versus $20,102 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,810. 11.1% of the population and 6.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 13.2% of those under the age of 18 and 8.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
