WABE FM (90.1MHz) is an Atlanta radio station and local affiliate of National Public Radio. WABE has a mostly classical music format but airs news shows as well. The station is owned and operated by the Atlanta Board of Education (hence the ABE). It also broadcasts the Georgia Radio Reading Service and educational programming on subcarriers.
Its two major on-air personalities host classical programs on the station. Lois Reitzes is the longtime host of morning classical program "Second Cup." She came to WABE in 1979 from WFIU in Bloomington, Indiana. Lois served as a classical host for WFIU while at Indiana University working toward a double major in piano and musicology. Lois is quite an accomplished pianist. John Lemley joined the station's on-air team in 1997 as host of an afternoon classical program, at that time called "Daytime." The program was renamed "Bach's Lunch" in 2004. He also serves as producer and host of WABE's "Tapestry," a weekly program of choral music. John's voice can also be heard on WABE's companion television station, WPBA TV 30, as daytime voiceover announcer. John came to WABE from WBHM in Birmingham, where he served as host of "Afternoon Classics" and "All Things Considered." In Birmingham, from 1987 to 1997, he was also one of the biggest names in the Magic City's theatre scene, performing with Town & Gown Theatre, Summerfest, Birmingham-Southern Theatre and Birmingham Children's Theatre.
