Tulare is a city located in Tulare County, California. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 43,994.

Tulare is located at 36°12'24" North, 119°20'33" West (36.206601, -119.342404)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 43.2 km² (16.7 mi²). 43.0 km² (16.6 mi²) of it is land and 0.2 km² (0.1 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.42% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 43,994 people, 13,543 households, and 10,753 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,022.6/km² (2,648.2/mi²). There are 14,253 housing units at an average density of 331.3/km² (858.0/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 56.38% White, 5.02% African American, 1.40% Native American, 2.02% Asian, 0.12% Pacific Islander, 29.09% from other races, and 5.96% from two or more races. 45.59% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 13,543 households out of which 46.3% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.9% are married couples living together, 17.1% have a female householder with no husband present, and 20.6% are non-families. 16.7% of all households are made up of individuals and 8.0% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 3.22 and the average family size is 3.57.

In the city the population is spread out with 34.6% under the age of 18, 10.5% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 16.8% from 45 to 64, and 9.4% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 28 years. For every 100 females there are 94.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 91.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $33,637, and the median income for a family is $36,935. Males have a median income of $31,467 versus $23,775 for females. The per capita income for the city is $13,655. 20.7% of the population and 16.9% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 27.1% of those under the age of 18 and 14.0% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
