Tehama County, California

Tehama County is a county located in Northern California. It is bisected by the Sacramento River. As of 2000 its population was 56,039. The county seat is Red Bluff.

History
Tehama County was formed from parts of Butte, Colusa and Shasta Counties in 1856.
The county is named for the City of Tehama. Suggested possible roots are the Arabic word tehama ("hot low-lands"), the Spanish word tejamanil (shingle), or "high water" in the dialect of local Native Americans.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 7,672 km² (2,962 mi²). 7,643 km² (2,951 mi²) of it is land and 29 km² (11 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.38% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 56,039 people, 21,013 households, and 14,898 families residing in the county. The population density is 7/km² (19/mi²). There are 23,547 housing units at an average density of 3/km² (8/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 84.79% White, 0.57% Black or African American, 2.10% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 8.26% from other races, and 3.39% from two or more races. 15.83% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 21,013 households out of which 32.90% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.60% are married couples living together, 11.60% have a female householder with no husband present, and 29.10% are non-families. 24.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.62 and the average family size is 3.08.
In the county the population is spread out with 27.40% under the age of 18, 7.80% from 18 to 24, 25.70% from 25 to 44, 23.20% from 45 to 64, and 15.90% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 97.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 95.00 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $31,206, and the median income for a family is $37,277. Males have a median income of $30,872 versus $22,864 for females. The per capita income for the county is $15,793. 17.30% of the population and 13.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 24.00% of those under the age of 18 and 9.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
