History

Murrieta was colonized first in 1863 by the Spanish explorer Don Juan Murrieta. Don Juan fell in love with the valley surrounded by rolling foothills on all sides. He took up sheep ranching, establishing the first settlement in the valley.

Murrieta experienced two significant booms: first in the late 19th century, and then a century later in the 1980s. The first boom was started when a railroad line was built through the town; by 1890 there were approximately 800 people living in Murrieta. In 1935, the trains stopped using the route through Murrieta, and the town would remain small until 1987, the beginning of a period of explosive growth. On 1 July, 1991 Murrieta became a city, having 29,000 people.

High school

Murrieta Valley High School opened in 1990 as Murrieta's first high school. The first graduating class for Murrieta Valley High School was in 1994. The class of 2005 had approximately 960 graduating seniors.

Murrieta Valley High School's mascot is the nighthawk.
