Sierra County is a county located in California's Sierra Nevada, northeast of Sacramento on the border with Nevada. As of 2000 the population is 3,555. The county seat is Downieville.
The only incorporated city in the county is Loyalton.

History
Sierra County was formed from parts of Yuba County in 1852.
The county derives its name from the Sierra Nevada Mountains.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,491 km² (962 mi²). 2,469 km² (953 mi²) of it is land and 22 km² (9 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 0.89% water.
Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 3,555 people, 1,520 households, and 986 families residing in the county. The population density is 1/km² (4/mi²). There are 2,202 housing units at an average density of 1/km² (2/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 94.18% White, 0.20% Black or African American, 1.88% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.08% Pacific Islander, 1.04% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. 5.99% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 1,520 households out of which 27.60% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.10% are married couples living together, 7.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 35.10% are non-families. 29.00% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.50% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.32 and the average family size is 2.83.
In the county the population is spread out with 23.30% under the age of 18, 4.80% from 18 to 24, 24.00% from 25 to 44, 30.20% from 45 to 64, and 17.70% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 44 years. For every 100 females there are 102.00 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 97.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $35,827, and the median income for a family is $42,756. Males have a median income of $36,121 versus $30,000 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,815. 11.30% of the population and 9.00% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 14.30% of those under the age of 18 and 2.20% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.

- Because Loyalton is Sierra County's most populous municipality and its only incorporated city, generally half of the meetings of the county's board of supervisors are held in Downieville and the other half are held in Loyalton.
