Tom Green County is a county located in the state of Texas. As of 2000, the population is 104,010. Its county seat is San Angelo6.

History
The county was established by the state legislature on March 13, 1874, and named for Thomas Green, a Confederate brigadier general. It originally comprised an area of over 60,000 square miles.
The original county seat was the town of Ben Ficklin. In 1882 flood waters destroyed the town and drowned 65 people. The county seat was moved to San Angela, and that town's name was changed to San Angelo.
Geography
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 3,990 km² (1,541 mi²). 3,942 km² (1,522 mi²) of it is land and 48 km² (18 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 1.20% water.

Demographics
As of the census2 of 2000, there are 104,010 people, 39,503 households, and 26,783 families residing in the county. The population density is 26/km² (68/mi²). There are 43,916 housing units at an average density of 11/km² (29/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 79.08% White, 4.13% Black or African American, 0.65% Native American, 0.86% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, 12.82% from other races, and 2.39% from two or more races. 30.71% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There are 39,503 households out of which 33.00% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 52.10% are married couples living together, 11.90% have a female householder with no husband present, and 32.20% are non-families. 27.20% of all households are made up of individuals and 10.80% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.52 and the average family size is 3.09.
In the county, the population is spread out with 26.10% under the age of 18, 12.80% from 18 to 24, 27.10% from 25 to 44, 20.60% from 45 to 64, and 13.40% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 34 years. For every 100 females there are 93.70 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 89.90 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $33,148, and the median income for a family is $39,482. Males have a median income of $27,949 versus $20,683 for females. The per capita income for the county is $17,325. 15.20% of the population and 11.20% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 20.20% of those under the age of 18 and 11.80% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
