Sullivan County is a county located in the state of New York. As of 2000, the population is 73,966. The county seat is Monticello. The name is in honor of Major General John Sullivan, who was a hero in the American Revolutionary War.

History

When New York State established its first twelve counties in 1683, the present Sullivan County was part of Ulster County.

In 1809, Sullivan County was split from Ulster County.

Geography

Sullivan County is in the southern part of New York State, southeast of Binghamton and slightly west of due south of Albany. It is separated by the Delaware River from Pennsylvania.

The county is nestled firmly within the Catskill Mountains. Its northeastern corner is within the Catskill Park.

The highest point in the county is a 3,118-foot (950 m) peak unofficially known as Beech Mountain, near Hodge Pond, a subsidiary summit to Mongaup Mountain across the Ulster County line. The lowest point is along the Delaware River.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 2,582 km² (997 mi²). 2,512 km² (970 mi²) of it is land and 70 km² (27 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 2.72% water.

Demographics

As of the census2 of 2000, there are 73,966 people, 27,661 households, and 18,311 families residing in the county. The population density is 29/km² (76/mi²). There are 44,730 housing units at an average density of 18/km² (46/mi²). The racial makeup of the county is 85.31% White, 8.51% Black or African American, 0.27% Native American, 1.12% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.89% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. 9.25% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 27,661 households out of which 31.30% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.10% are married couples living together, 11.40% have a female householder with no husband present, and 33.80% are non-families. 27.90% of all households are made up of individuals and 11.40% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.50 and the average family size is 3.05.

In the county the population is spread out with 24.90% under the age of 18, 7.30% from 18 to 24, 28.10% from 25 to 44, 25.40% from 45 to 64, and 14.30% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 39 years. For every 100 females there are 103.60 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 102.80 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $36,998, and the median income for a family is $43,458. Males have a median income of $36,110 versus $25,754 for females. The per capita income for the county is $18,892. 16.30% of the population and 11.60% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 21.60% of those under the age of 18 and 10.70% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
