Port Jervis, New York

Port Jervis is a city located in Orange County in the U.S. state of New York. As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 8,860.

The City of Port Jervis is located where New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania meet. Port Jervis was a port on the Delaware and Hudson Canal and is also known as the "River City." The communities of Germantown (which is now actually Port Jervis' West End) and Cuddebackville are adjacent to Port Jervis, and Montague, New Jersey and Matamoras, Pennsylvania face it across the respective state borders. The Orange County Town of Deerpark is to the north.


The town is the last stop on the 95-mile-long commuter railroad line from Hoboken, New Jersey and New York City that is contracted to NJ Transit by the Metro-North Commuter Railroad Company (the line itself continues on to Binghamton, but passenger service beyond Port Jervis was discontinued in 1971).

Geography

The city is on the north bank of the Delaware River.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.0 km² (2.7 mi²). 6.6 km² (2.5 mi²) of it is land and 0.5 km² (0.2 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 6.64% water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 8,860 people, 3,533 households, and 2,158 families residing in the city. The population density is 1,346.8/km² (3,494.1/mi²). There are 3,851 housing units at an average density of 585.4/km² (1,518.7/mi²). The racial makeup of the city is 89.80% White, 4.50% African American, 0.59% Native American, 0.64% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.19% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. 7.45% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,533 households out of which 32.4% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.9% are married couples living together, 15.6% have a female householder with no husband present, and 38.9% are non-families. 32.6% of all households are made up of individuals and 15.1% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.48 and the average family size is 3.15.

In the city the population is spread out with 27.8% under the age of 18, 8.4% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 36 years. For every 100 females there are 91.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 86.0 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $30,241, and the median income for a family is $35,481. Males have a median income of $31,851 versus $22,274 for females. The per capita income for the city is $16,525. 17.5% of the population and 14.2% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 25.5% of those under the age of 18 and 10.3% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
