Newark, New York

Newark is a village located in Wayne County, New York. As of the 2000 census, the village had a total population of 9,682.

The Village of Newark is in the south part of the Town of Arcadia. The center of the village is at Main Street (Route 88) and Union Street (Route 31).

History

The village was originally called Miller's Basin, after the person who built that section of the Erie Canal. The current village also includes the former Village of Arcadia, which was previously called Lockville prior to its incorporation in 1839. The Village of Newark was incorporated in 1853.

Geography

Newark is located at 43°2'36" North, 77°5'38" West (43.043412, -77.093848)Template:GR.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 14.0 km² (5.4 mi²). 13.9 km² (5.4 mi²) of it is land and 0.19% is water.

Demographics

As of the censusTemplate:GR of 2000, there are 9,682 people, 3,857 households, and 2,433 families residing in the village. The population density is 694.8/km² (1,798.8/mi²). There are 4,104 housing units at an average density of 294.5/km² (762.5/mi²). The racial makeup of the village is 89.01% White, 4.98% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 2.91% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. 7.37% of the population are Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There are 3,857 households out of which 31.8% have children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.5% are married couples living together, 15.5% have a female householder with no husband present, and 36.9% are non-families. 30.8% of all households are made up of individuals and 14.7% have someone living alone who is 65 years of age or older. The average household size is 2.39 and the average family size is 2.94.

In the village the population is spread out with 25.4% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.8% who are 65 years of age or older. The median age is 38 years. For every 100 females there are 87.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there are 81.8 males.

The median income for a household in the village is $32,542, and the median income for a family is $40,863. Males have a median income of $31,641 versus $23,588 for females. The per capita income for the village is $18,176. 17.4% of the population and 12.5% of families are below the poverty line. Out of the total population, 28.4% of those under the age of 18 and 11.6% of those 65 and older are living below the poverty line.
